In this episode, Christophe, the French baker and pastry chef extraordinaire, and his trusty apprentice, Little H, convince the lazy cook, me, that baking bread is a piece of cake (who let this woman out of the punitentiary?)
1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees celsius, sift the plain flour and bicarbonate soda into a bowl. Throw in the wholemeal flour, salt and sugar.2. In another bowl, lightly beat the eggs and stir in milk, then mix the liquid and dry ingredients together.3. Get in with your hands to get the dough together.4. Split in two pieces, put on baking paper (or foil if you’ve run out like we did!) and shape into a ball with wet hands.
5. Slice into the top with a wet knife, move dough with paper or foil onto a tray and bake in the oven until golden brown. 6. Test by piercing the centre with a knife and if it comes out clean the bread is ready to take out and cool on a rack. See how long you can wait before tucking in.
